Recently, Paul and I were sent 2 bottles of bloo juice to try. I had never heard of this brand before, but Paul and I both love blueberries, so we were looking forward to trying something that boasted that “every bottle…is made with over 600 blueberries and nothing else; no added sugar, no preservatives, colour or additives.” On top of which, those 600+ blueberries are from the Country Magic blueberry farm in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, making bloo juice a truly Canadian product.
bloo juice is available in three flavours: blueberry, blueberry/strawberry and blueberry/citrus and you can currently find it in grocery stores in eastern Canada (there’s a store locater on their website: www.bloojuice.com.
We were sent two bottles to try – the original blueberry and the blueberry/citrus. The colour of the juice is an incredible dark blue – almost black. I was a little worried that it would be too syrupy and cloying, much how many ‘pure fruit juice and nothing else’ drinks can be, but we were pleasantly surprised. Both juices were very light and tasted like pure blueberries (what else?!). It wasn’t overly sweet or tart and had a nice balance to it.
Although both were great to drink straight out of the bottle, Paul and I both preferred the blueberry/citrus one and that’s the one I used to create the following smoothie with.
ingredients
- 1/2 cup bloo blueberry/citrus juice
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar (optional)
- 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
- 1/4 cup fresh blueberries
directions
- (If you are not using sugar, you can skip to step 2.) In a large glass, stir together the blueberry juice and 1 tbsp of sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Pour the blueberry juice, milk and yogurt into a blender, add the blueberries and pulse until mixed.
- Taste the mixture and add the rest of the sugar, if needed, to suit your taste. Pulse one more time to mix completely.
There are so many ways to switch up this smoothie (any combination of fruit juices and yogurts would probably taste delicious) and to make this smoothie even healthier, you can:
- use honey as a sweetener instead of sugar
- use a non-fat or probiotic yogurt
- use low-fat milk
