As you may or may not know…I’m a bit obsessed with food books. Food writing, cookbooks, food reference books, it doesn’t matter, I read them all. I was collecting and reading food books WAY before I started this blog and WAY before I started trying to find my way in my kitchen. I’m probably one of the few people on the planet who owned over 50 cookbooks before I tried cooking a recipe from one of them (told you I had a problem!)
As you found out in my previous post, “organizing my cookbook shelves”, my food book collection has taken on a life of its own and I’m getting tired of walking around book piles on the floor. I know there are some of you that know exactly what I’m talking about!
Yes, I love my books!
To celebrate the upcoming 2-year anniversary of kitchen frolic and to spread the book love, I’m giving away one $50 gift card to Indigo/Chapters or Amazon (winner’s choice).
There are three ways to enter:
- Comment on THIS post telling me about a food book you love that I need in my collection (don’t forget to leave me a way to contact you – email, Twitter handle, etc – if you win!) (3 entries)
- Follow me (@kitchenfrolic) on Twitter and tweet the following (you can do this once per day – 1 entry per tweet): Help @kitchenfrolic spread the food book love for a chance to win a $50 GC to Indigo/Chapters or Amazon! http://bit.ly/1hkSaWP
- Like the kitchen frolic Facebook page (1 entry)
For a bonus entry:
- Read my post “organizing my cookbook shelves” and leave a comment on THAT post telling me how you organize your cookbooks/foodbooks (and how I should do mine). (3 entries)
Contest begins Tuesday, April 22, 2014 and ends at 11:59 pm EST on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.
Thanks to everyone that entered – my cookbook wishlist is SO much longer thanks to all your suggestions! Congratulations to Jennifer of Ricotta and Radishes, who was the winner of a $50 gift card to Indigo/Chapters! Happy shopping!
Disclosure: This giveaway is NOT sponsored and/or affiliated with either Chapters or Amazon. kitchen frolic purchased the prize at full retail value in order to hold this giveaway. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.
I love the Martha Stewart Cookie book! That’s one of my favs
TW – I love that book too! Do you have the others in that series (Cupcakes, Cakes)? I have made so many things from the Martha Stewart Cupcakes book!
Ahhh! So difficult to narrow this down, but do you have the Baked cookbooks? I love them! http://bakednyc.com/books/
I totally follow you on twitter and facebook under @abakedcreation
Aw crap – Sylvia! I have never seen the Baked cookbooks before – and now all 3 are on my wishlist! They are gorgeous! Thanks for introducing them to me!
I only have a few, so I am not a good candidate to suggest to someone who have 150 in their collection…. but the Craft Beer Cookbook is def on my list to buy right now
That’s a great book Vickie! I bought one for myself and one to give to my brother-in-law as a gift. One of my recent favourites for sure!
I love me some cookbooks! My collection is limited to mostly Micheal Smith cookbooks but I received a gift for Christmas from a friend that you and everyone (who isn’t a vegetarian) should read. The book is “In The Charcuterie” from Boetticher an Miller. Enjoy!
Thanks Matt. Paul & I are definitely meat-lovers, so In The Charcuterie looks right up our alley! Another one for my wishlist – thanks!
You have such a wonderful collection! How about ‘From Earth to Table’ for local and seasonal selections. It is also really great reading with sections following the growing of wheat to making of bread, farmer’s stories etc. 🙂
You definitely need to add Gordon Ramsey’s World Kitchen to your collection if you don’t have it – I use it a lot! Also Rose Reisman’s new book, … the best of…is a good one.

Saw you had a lot of Alton Brown books, so I assume you not only like learning about recipes but also learn the science behind food. Why certain things cook differently, what methods actually do what to the protein structures of ingredients, where and how methods and ingredients were developed. Check out Harold McGee On Food and Cooking, and Modernist Cuisine.
You assume right Andrew! I love Alton’s books and I do have a copy of McGee’s On Food and Cooking, although I have to admit, I’ve never read the entire thing. Modernist Cuisine is definitely high on my list of Must Buy Books!

I recently bought “The Breath of a Wok” by Grace Young and love it. On top of great traditional Chinese recipes from chefs and grandmothers, it’s also full of personal stories and experiences.

Thanks for the reco Xiao! I’ve never heard of this book but it looks like something I’d definitely enjoy!

Jamie Oliver Cook books are my favourite!! They’re just styled so beautifully and the pictures and print are perfectly proportioned. but like you … I haven’t had the chance to cook anything from his books yet! I just like to collect. LOL

I’m vegetarian and cook mostly vegan meals for myself, so books like Vegan Planet and Appetite for Reduction have been helpful…I also love the new Isa Does it and Oh She Glows cookbooks!
I also follow you on Facebook 🙂
the budget bytes cookbook is great!
Well I dont know too many cookbooks by name, but you should definitely get a good Filipino cookbook. mmm
I want to get a copy of The Nourished Kitchen cookbook that was just published recently
Love Ina Garten, I own about 10 of her cookbooks!
I don’t have any of her cookbooks although I loved watching her show. Which of her books would you say is your favourite? Maybe I’ll pick that one up first…
I’m following on Facebook (Monica Kelly Parlee)

I love my cookbooks too, I have more than a slight obsession! If you can get it there, Miranda Gore-Brown’s book Biscuit is great, or anything by Mary Berry. These are both British. I’d be interested to hear which American books would give me the best recipes to try! @sianytweet
Happy (almost) blogoversery! I like Antonio Bachour’s Bachour. Super awesome!!
I’m loving the new David Lebovitz cookbook. I read it from cover to cover the day after it arrived. I haven’t started cooking from it yet, but from what I know of his previous books, I know the recipes are going to be as tasty as they look/sound.

My current favourite cookbook is An Edible Mosaic. It has some amazing Middle Eastern recipes!
Like you on FB!
I have over 200 cookbooks, I collect them. I don’t know when to put them anymore 🙂 Recently I bought the Oh She Glows cookbook that I love. I am not a vegan but her recipes are wonderful. I like it so much that I ask her if I could host a giveaway for her cookbook and she said yes. So I will be doing one in May.
Thanks Helene! Glad to meet someone who has more cookbooks than me! LOL.
I did tweet, I follow you on twitter and facebook and I left a comment on your other post. Thanks for the amazing giveaway.
I love a good cookbook! I recently received “Butter” (Rose Daykin), based on recipes from a Vancouver bakery by the same name, and it is GORGEOUS. You need it 🙂
Hi Anna!
I got the Butter cookbook for my birthday and you’re so right – it’s absolutely gorgeous! I spent so long just browsing the photos and dreaming about walking into the bakery.
I’ve already made one recipe from the book and it turned out great – will definitely be making more soon!
Although I have an entire floor to ceiling shelf devoted to cookbooks (it’s a problem) the books that I tend to actually cook from over and over again are my books from by Donna Hay. I always give Off The Shelf to people who are just starting to cook a lot.
Wow, Carole, I would love to see a photo of your bookshelf!
When I was starting out and just had a few cookbooks, I was always drawn to Donna Hay’s books. They photography and simplicity of the layout was so beautiful and really appealed to me. I only have the 2 Classics but all of hers are on my list to get someday!
Despite the lack of pictures (and what it has being in black and white), Sheila Lukins’ All Around The World Cookbook is among my favourites, simply for the stories she tells. It’s an older book, but it is one I read over and over. I even cook from it sometimes. LOL

Definitely Plenty, Jerusalem and Pok Pok, but I expect you might already have those based on their popularity! Another good one that I’m a fan of is Very Fond of Food by Sophie Dahl.
I love the Baked cookbooks, so many delicious desserts
Do you have any of Laura Calder’s books? Excellent recipes and great reading. She has a brand new one out too.

Hard to recommend a book you might not have, but one of my favourites is Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home. Even though I’m not vegetarian I use a lot of recipes from this book.

I’ve been part of French Fridays with Dorie from the beginning and Around My French Table has become indispensable in my kitchen. Some of my other favourites are Good to the Grain, Smitten Kitchen, Vegetable Literacy, and Gourmet Today. I’m also a big fan of vintage cookbooks – aside from some reliance on mixes, there’s some solid cooking advice there and lots of recipes for experimenting with and updating.
