If you’ve heard that yell before, then you know you’re within earshot of Erynn Mayes and Megan Chan, the two lovely gals behind Kanga (@EatKanga).
I met Erynn and Megan about a year ago and Paul and I fell in love with their Aussie Meat Pies almost immediately (how could we not? It’s pastry perfection, filled with delicious fillings and they SQUIRT IN KETCHUP!)
Well, we’ve watched as the gals built their dream – from pop-up events to getting their pies into retail shops to launching a Kickstarter campaign (of which Paul and I are proud supporters!). Today the dream grows even more – because TODAY the doors officially open on Kanga’s shop at 65 Duncan Street in Toronto!
Along with their classic, The Traditional Aussie (my favourite), they are releasing four new pies: the Kiwi Classic, El Diablo, Mum’s Chicken Pie, and Mates’ Masala. Check out the full pie menu:
The shop will also carry other treats like Poutine Your Pie, sausage rolls, spinach rolls, fries and desserts (lamingtons, anyone?). The shop is open both early morning and late night, you can get your Aussie meat pie fill almost anytime of the day.
This past Tuesday, Kanga held a special media preview to check out the new space and their food. Unfortunately, Paul and I couldn’t make it, but the awesome Adrienne (fellow #BellyMonster shout-out!) agreed to go in my place and represent kitchen frolic at the event.
I’m really jealous that Adrie got to eat all this goodness! Here’s her thoughts on the event:
The restaurant space was small but very bright. The whole right side of the space was taken up by counter seating that had wireless chargers available and the wall had a world map. The team at Kanga encourage guests to pin where they’re from or where they’ve been. High ceilings and the boomerangs were a cute and fun touch.
I managed to try a whole bunch of pie flavours, including:
- Traditional Aussie Meat Pie
- Mates Masala (veggie with chickpeas)
- Butter Chix
- The Canadian (Steak and Bacon)
- El Diablo (pulled pork topped with mashed potato)
Plus, I got to try a Poutine and Pie (a pie in the poutine).
The Butter Chix was awesome and so was the Traditional Aussie Meat Piepie with “tomato sauce” (or what we North Americans refer to as “ketchup”).
For first-time visitors, I definitely recommend trying the Traditional because you can taste the flavour of the meat really well and don’t forget to have it the Aussie way – with the tomato sauce. 🙂
Some of the other event attendees were raving about the Creamy Zucchini pie but unfortunately, I didn’t get to try it – maybe next time!
Thanks to Adrie for attending the event! All images used in this post (except the first one) were taken by Adrienne and photo rights belong to her. Adrie will be launching her own food blog, foodie bites, very soon! In the meantime, you can follow her food adventures on Twitter – @AdrienneDLR.
Congrats to Erynn and Megan on the awesome new shop – Paul and I can’t wait to come by and try all the new flavours! — Stephanie

Hubby & I stumbled upon it last Sunday – they were sold out of just about everything – but we did manage to get a Mom’s and a Butter Chix. I felt Mom’s could have been juicier, but the Butter Chix was delish – I’d get it again for sure!
Cool! I’ll have to check them out!!
