As you may know, I recently took part in (AND WON!) the #OGBChallenge. During the Challenge, I shared a couple of shots during the “prep” phase of the recipes, including this bowl filled with beautiful spices:
I just love the smell of fresh spices, especially when they come together properly in a recipe! Today I wanted to share an online source that I recently discovered for some of the amazing spices I used to create two of my BBQ Challenge recipes (the Pulled Pork Pitas and the Masala Chicken Drumsticks) – the Spice Sanctuary.
Founded by Trusha Patel and based in Canmore, Alberta, Spice Sanctuary is a 100% Canadian owned company, “born from a passion for good food and healthy cooking and eating using the finest of ingredients…our purpose is to offer quality grade, full-flavour organic spices and spice blends and rubs across Canada. Delivered directly from premium growing regions around the world using the shortest possible supply chain, our recently harvested, top grade, small batch spices are packaged only the one time, in Canada.”
Several months ago, Trusha was kind enough to send me a few of her spices to try out (she personally picked out spices she thought I’d enjoy after we emailed back and forth about my own preferences, any food allergies, etc). I used all three of the spices that she sent (Tellicheery Black Pepper, Ground Nutmeg and Ground Red Chili) in my winning Masala Chicken Drumsticks recipe.
Packaged in resealable pouches, the spices smell intensely fresh and are nicely labeled in front with the spice name, plus where it falls on the ‘hotness’ scale – mild, sweet, pungent or hot. Each package comes with information on each spice, include the fact that all three were non-irradiated and non-fumigated.
Black Peppercorns are a staple in our kitchen and I loved the smell and taste of both the nutmeg and the chili were amazing (a little goes a long way!). But enough about how much I enjoyed the spices – how would YOU use these?

I love to bake with nutmeg – especially in Pumpkin Pie
Did you know that nutmeg can be prone to aflatoxins but ours are tested for these substances before we even bring them in Canada 🙂
I didn’t know that, but glad to hear that yours are safe!

Currently my favorite spice is Cumin (though it certainly varies). I’ve been making Curry every week and I find that I have to add more Cumin or it just isn’t good enough, same goes for my Tex-Mex Chili.
Francine, try combining cumin with some coriander ground..that is a marriage made in heaven and really elevates dishes such as curries.
sorry meant Margot!
