Ok, so I’m a little late to the celebrations, but I just wanted to wish everyone who is celebrating a very happy Lunar New Year! May the Year of the Monkey bring you lots of happiness, laughter, luck, prosperity, and of course, good eats! Oh and good health. That’s REALLY important (you’ll understand why in one sec…)
The main reason for me being tardy is…well, I’m sick. Paul and I both have the flu so, needless to say, we have been holed up with lots of Tylenol, tissues and hot tea. To top that off, my vertigo decided to act up for the first time in years, so now I have to deal with dizziness and nausea too.
The worst part about being so sick means I’m missing out on some really great Chinese New Year foods. So, I decided to live vicariously through my online friends and asked them to share some of their favourite Lunar New Year foods and recipes with me.
Hopefully, I’m getting all the ‘sick’ out of the way and the rest of the year will be nothing but good health!
There are lots of posts out there teaching you which dishes you should eat to celebrate Chinese New Year and why, so I won’t bother with that in this post. Let’s just see what you had to share, shall we?
Nian Gao was a popular choice and is one of my family’s must-have dishes too. As it is for Cynthia Priest (@cynderbug), who shared her mom’s recipe on her blog.

My fellow Belly Monster, Judy chimed in with a couple of favourites.
My sister, @suziesaurus, was too busy to properly answer me because she was preoccupied with frying up some turnip pancakes.
I love turnip cake (which isn’t really a cake…and yes, it’s made of turnips, and well, ok, it’s probably an acquired taste). My mom used to make AMAZING turnip cakes and would churn out dozens around Chinese New Year because all her friends would want them. Unfortunately, since her stroke, she hasn’t been able to cook much, but I’m hoping that one day soon we can make turnip cake together.
In the meantime, check out the recipe that Xiao (@xiaoeats) shared on her blog.

Other fun recipes that bloggers were celebrating with include these fun Fried Shrimp Wontons by Shareba (@InSearchOfYummy) (I know you said they’re not traditional Shareba, but my mom used to make them all the time too!) and a Spicy Honey Garlic Chicken Stir Fry by (@PeppersPennies)

Well, no matter how you celebrated the Lunar New Year, and whatever was on your menu – I wish you and your family nothing but the best for the upcoming year!
